A small selection of banjos and related instruments that form part of Andrew’s instrument collection. This includes a 5-string banjo, tenor banjo, cavaco-banjo (a cross between a cavaquinho/cavaco and banjo) and a banjo mandolin. In the other instruments area there are some instruments that share the characteristics of the head being a membrane such as the sanxian which uses snake skin for the head. Modern banjos were developed in America from instruments originating in Africa and the Caribbean.

An old banjo mandolin by an unknown maker. Head is splitting along one edge so it could do with replacement but as it is mainly a wall-hanger it is not a priority.
